THE BANNERS AND THE ARTISTS
It is the painted banner that is awarded to the winner of the joust. While, as it has been said, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance the banner was an ample precious drape of silken velvet, from which one could make clothing, curtains, tablecloths, sleeves, etc., already in the 1800s there is the documented use of giving the winner a true painted standard. With regard to this, at the Art Gallery of Ascoli Piceno several sketches are conserved for the Banner of Sant'Emidio realized by the artist and scholar Giulio Gabrielli (1832 - 1910).
